Week #6: Exercising Your Funny Bone

When was the last time you remember actually laughing out loud? There are statistics floating around that the average adult laughs 15-20 times per day. For some of us, this might seem over-the-top. Another statistic that pops up is that children laugh upwards of 300 times on a daily basis. What is so funny?!? At what point did we, as adults, give up on laughter? Was it when puberty hit us over the head? Was it when we became responsible for earning our own way in life? Did we happen to encounter such tragedy laughter left us to face bleakness unabated? Whatever our personal reasons for minimizing our own laughter, know you can regain the strength in your funny bone. And you can start today. Now even.

Why is laughter so important? First, it is up to us to choose to live in joy. Easier said than done for some. Let’s take a look at just some of the benefits behind laughter proving it really IS the best medicine:

  1. Reduces blood pressure
  2. Reduces stress hormone levels
  3. Fortifies immune system
  4. Boosts T-cells
  5. Triggers the release of endorphins
  6. Works your abs
  7. Increases blood flow to the heart
  8. Enhances creativity and optimism

And there are numerous other benefits to keep this list going. So what is YOUR laughter trigger? Is it watching cat videos? Kids at play? Hearing the giggles of an infant? And there’s nothing like group laughter to keep your endorphins flowing. Perhaps it is time for you to make a date with yourself. What are some other things you can do to flex your funny bone? The main point is for you to be intentional in setting a goal to laugh more. Wouldn’t it be great to wake up with laughter? Can you imagine?

For starters, smile more. Even if you’re not feeling it at first. Wake up and smile. That wasn’t so bad, was it? Smile when you look at yourself in the mirror. I know, that can be challenging, but do it anyway. Who knows? It might actually make you laugh. Definitely smile at people as you approach them. So what if they think you’re crazy. You have given them something to brighten their day, and yours: a smile. Save the funny memes or video clips that make you laugh. Revisit them from time to time. Share them with others. There are all kinds of comedians. Discover your favorite. Check them out on YouTube or even on Netflix.
