Laura Oellerich’s Guide to Shopping Local in Tacoma’s Proctor District
December 5, 2017Nestled in North Tacoma and almost like its own little town, Proctor is a popular destination neighborhood for locals and out-of-towners alike! Proctor Street was named in 1890 when John G. Proctor built his family home on the south end of the street, and today, visitors can enjoy a small-town atmosphere alongside many modern amenities.
REALTOR® Laura Oellerich lives in Proctor, and one of her favorite things about living in this historic community is all of the great shopping! “I live in Proctor and love being able to walk up the street and shop,” shares Laura. “I feel it is important to support local business. I always run into people I know when I am shopping. It is a great community!”

“The NW shop has items only made in the NW,” says Laura. “It is a great place to buy gifts and mail directly to relatives or friends out of the area.” Located at 2702 North Proctor Street, this Tacoma staple is stocked up with local specialty foods, books, clothing, and much more—all made in Washington!
Laura especially recommends Teaching Toys for its creative toys that teach kids as they play. At 2624 North Proctor Street, this must-visit spot is right in the heart of Proctor District. Their huge selection of toys and learning materials is a dream for kids, parents, and teachers alike! (Also, they have a Gig Harbor location!)
“Compass Rose is my go-to shop for gifts for friends,” says Laura. “I love the variety of cards they have and the quality and uniqueness of the products they sell. There is something for everyone at that shop!” Laura is definitely right—Compass Rose (3815 N 26th St) is brimming with eclectic products, including jewelry, books, clothes, toys, and other gift items.
Want to spend the day in Proctor? Laura has a few other top picks: “There are many restaurants and coffee shops in Proctor, as well as a bowling alley and Tacoma's oldest movie theatre, The Blue Mouse. The Farmer's Market is there every Saturday morning with prepared food, fresh produce, meats and pastries.”
For those who don’t live in the area, there is street parking and 3 parking lots in Proctor where you can park for free.
