Sparked by the concern about the burden on public schools, which were increasingly expected to provide for the basic needs of students in addition to education, Communities in Schools began operating in Washington State in 1991. Communities in Schools of Peninsula (CISP) was locally incorporated in 2000 and serves children and families residing within the boundaries of the Peninsula School District. The organization partners with schools and local community agencies to provide programs and services that alleviate the barriers hindering the learning of our youth. They offer many incredible services including student mentoring, tutoring, school supplies, parental education, and even dental services to name a few! In 2016, CISP helped nearly 3,514 local students achieve their goals!
The turnout for the Summer Send Off Concert was incredible! Many from the community (and of course a few four-legged fidos!) stopped by to enjoy the rockin’ jams of Sounds Like Dolores, while also participating in a fundraising raffle for CISP! In true Gig Harbor form, many visitors arrived at Skansie by boat and kayak - so fun!
Communities in Schools provides services to students efficiently and cost-effectively thanks to the support of thousands of volunteers, donors and activists across the country. Approximately 97% of the young people we serve stay in school and remain on track to graduation.
