December in Tacoma

The holidays are finally here and Tacoma is full of spirit, life, and hope. This month we've found ways to safely spread holiday cheer virtually and in person. Markets, food drives, lighted displays, and local music are still very much alive this year, even if they look a little different. Come "join" us as we drink for a cause, shop for some local art and goods, support our neighbors, and enjoy some magical shows and displays from the warmth of our homes (and vehicles).

November 27th - January 3rd

It seems no winter in Pierce County is complete without a stroll through the glittering bulbs of Zoolights. With over 700,000 shimmering LEDs lovingly sculpted to create wonderful seascapes, animal shenanigans, and PNW views, this event is sure to bring some “normalcy” back to this strange year. Tickets are online pre-purchase only, as each ticket will be registered for a time slot to avoid over-crowding. Additionally, a one-way path has been marked and of course masks are required. Food stands will be open throughout the campus, so you’ll still be able to enjoy that hot cocoa! Come safely celebrate 32 shimmering years at PDZA now through January 3rd.

December 3rd – January 8th

Online Facebook Celebration on January 11th!

The Hoppy Holiday Food Drive was so much fun last year, we’ve decided to do it again! And this year we’ve invited eight different Tacoma breweries and cideries to join in on the fun! All donations are again going to the amazing Emergency Food Network, where they will be distributed throughout Pierce County to over 80 different pantries and meal sites. Last year alone, EFN served over 1million Pierce County residents!

To participate, simply drop off non-perishable food items and hygiene supplies at one of the select breweries OR make a monetary donation towards your favorite brewery's total online. Don't forget to help out your local brewery and grab a drink or two to-go! The brewery with the most donations will receive an epic Hoppy Holiday tap handle trophy! Additionally, for each donation, donors will be entered into a raffle to win some sweet brewery swag. Then, on January 11th, Peaks and Pints will be hosting a Facebook Live party where winners will be announced! Come support your local breweries and help EFN ensure that no person goes hungry this year!

Christmas Parades

While parades seem like such a thing of the past (as in a year ago), Pierce County just can’t be stopped! A couple of our favorites have gotten a little creative this year...

December 12th

Instead of lining the sidewalks to watch the marching bands and majestic floats make their way down the road, this year the City of Lakewood asks that you do the driving. This reverse parade of lights will take place along Lakewood Towne Center’s perimeter road, where floats, vehicles, and musical entertainment will be parked and set up for you to enjoy from the comfort of your vehicle. This is a safe and socially distance way to stay nice and toasty while you cruise through some spirited displays. If you make it all the way through, you may even catch a glimpse of St. Nick at the end!

December 19th

Bundle up and bring a seat because Tacoma Yacht Club’s lighted boat parade is ready to cruise down Ruston Way. Beginning at the Tacoma Yacht Club, dozens of boats from around the Puget Sound will be shining bring with some of the most festive holiday lights and decor. The sailing festivities begin after sunset around 5:30pm and will make their way down to the Foss Waterway concluding around 8pm. While it’s uncertain if and when restaurants along the water will be open, some homemade hot cocoa and a warm blanket are sure to do the trick anywhere along the nearly 6 mile stretch of water front.

Tacoma Musical Playhouse Virtual Events

Tacoma Musical Playhouse would love to spread some holiday cheer this year! These virtual holiday events will take place on the TMP stage but you'll be able to view them safely and comfortably from your home via Zoom.

December 5th

Mrs. Claus and a few helpful elves are ready to strike the harp and lead the chorus in some holiday tunes and would like YOU to join them. Snag a spot online now and get ready to log-in for the cheery sing-along followed by a special reading of “The Night Before Christmas” by the big man himself. Nothing says Christmas 2020 like gathering the kiddos around the laptop with hot cocoa in hand and singing your way into the holiday season!

December 11th - 20th

If you're more of a listening fan, these performances are sure to at least have you tapping you're foot along. Join cast members old and new as they perform classic holiday hits with all the glamour and glitz of a real Broadway show. Even with several opportunities to join in the Zoom show, grab tickets soon as space is limited. Supporting these live online shows is a great way to keep our local theaters alive this year!

Bonus: You can schedule a Virtual Visit with Santa Claus through TMP as well!
