Located in the southern area of Lakewood, Tillicum is a small community that rests along the shores of American Lake. According to local James Fisher, “Tillicum is a word in Chinook Jargon that means people, family, tribe, and relatives.” Tillicum’s sense of community is being revitalized with the Tillicum Neighborhood plan unfolding, and people can expect some exciting changes in the future.

James shared a few of the reasons why people love the Tillicum neighborhood—here are a few of the community’s highlights:

1. Central location close to Interstate-5 and JBLM.

Tucked right in between American Lake and I-5, many people treasure Tillicum for its quick freeway access. It’s a dream for commuters, especially those in the military who head to Joint Base Lewis-McChord for work.

2. Opportunity for outdoor exploration

If you love getting outside and boating, kayaking, swimming, fishing, paddle boarding, or just enjoying a relaxing picnic with a view, several opportunities await at your fingertips! The iconic American Lake is never far, and the nearby Harry Todd Park is a local favorite. This 17-acre park offers a beach for swimming, a skate park, picnic tables, and is the perfect way to spend a sunny Saturday.

3. Tillicum Youth and Family Center

This wonderful community resource offers locals a long list of benefits, including community dinners, after school tutoring programs, teen drop-in hours, weekly Bible studies, and more.

4. Thornewood Castle

“Tillicum is also home to Thornewood Castle, originally built in 1908 by Chester A. Thorne,” shares James. “It is a 27,000-square-foot piece of history with 54 rooms, 22 bedrooms, 22 bathrooms and it is built in a traditional Gothic Tudor style. Thornewood Castle is now privately owned and operates as a bed and breakfast. It is also the destination for many weddings and private events.”

5. Galloping Gertie’s Bar & Grill

In operation for over 60 years now, this local icon offers hearty, delicious fare! Take a look at their Yelp page for photos of their various dishes (but be careful if you’re hungry!).
